HANDS UPON THE STRANGE

Hands-On Workshops

Three sessions each day with Jeremy Johnson of Meddling With Nature. Every specimen is confirmed, every tool is provided, and everyone walks out with their work boxed and ready to travel.

The workshops

Butterfly pinning — Urania ripheus — the Madagascan sunset moth

Butterfly pinning

$170

Urania ripheus — the Madagascan sunset moth

1 hour · 15 seats

Start here. You'll relax, pin and set the wings of a Urania ripheus — arguably the most spectacular scaled wing on earth, iridescent green, copper and rose without a drop of pigment. A gentle, meditative first hour with the tools of the trade.

  • One Urania ripheus specimen
  • Riker mount display shadow box
  • Spreading board time, pins and technique
  • Take-home box and drying instructions
Beetle pinning — Eupatorus gracilicornis & Chalcosoma atlas

Beetle pinning

$215

Eupatorus gracilicornis & Chalcosoma atlas

2 hours · 15 seats

The armoured hour. Work with the five-horned Eupatorus gracilicornis and the three-horned Chalcosoma atlas — heavyweight rhinoceros beetles whose legs, antennae and horns are posed one joint at a time. Slower, more technical, and enormously satisfying.

  • Choice of Eupatorus gracilicornis or Chalcosoma atlas
  • Full posing and positioning instruction
  • Pins, points and setting materials
  • Take-home box and drying instructions
Scorpion mounting — Heterometrus laoticus — black forest emperor

Scorpion mounting

$290

Heterometrus laoticus — black forest emperor

2 hours · 15 seats

The finale. Black forest emperor scorpions are mounted sculpturally — claws raised, tail arched, whatever posture you want to freeze. It's the most open-ended of the three, so it's scheduled last: take your time, then take it straight home.

  • One Heterometrus laoticus (or closely related) specimen
  • Sculptural posing and mounting instruction
  • All pins, boards and setting materials
  • Take-home box and drying instructions
